Luiz Gonzaga
History
Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baião, needs no introduction. Born in Exu, Pernambuco, in 1912 and passed away in 1989, Gonzaga was the main person responsible for bringing forró, baião, xote and xaxado to all of Brazil. Accordion player, singer and composer, his songs portrayed the life and customs of the northeastern backlands, with lyrics that spoke of drought, love, longing and faith. With Dominguinhos and Jackson do Pandeiro, he formed the holy trinity of forró. "Asa Branca", "Baião", "Juazeiro", "Siriri" and "O Xote das Meninas" are just a few examples of his vast repertoire that has influenced generations of artists and continues to thrill lovers of pé de serra forró. His music echoes in every June party, in every accordion circle, perpetuating the legacy of one of the greatest icons of Brazilian culture. Luiz Gonzaga is synonymous with forró, with the Northeast, with Brazil.
